Meditation Retreat

Emptiness & Awareness

Join us for this 5-day meditation retreat in the magical mountains of Sintra at Quinta Ten Chi. Together, we will explore themes of emptiness & awareness through approximately 6 hours of daily meditation practice. Drawing on Samatha, Shikantaza, and Dzogchen meditation, from the main schools of Buddhism, this retreat offers a space to cultivate insight, stillness, clarity, and inner peace within a supportive environment.

Our retreats are for those interested in the deeper end of meditation practice.

  • Samatha: calm abiding where we cultivate concentration through the breath. Also known as ānāpānasati, mindfulness with breathing. Through the practice, one’s body relaxes and the mind quietens, giving rise to serenity and insight. Letting go naturally deepens, and the way to awakening opens.

Shikantaza: also known as silent illumination or choiceless awareness — where we marinate in the void of awareness. Guided meditations will be provided to flavour this method, moving from metta to stillness, and using Vipassana insight to investigate the three characteristics; not-self (anatta), impermanence (anicca) and suffering (dukkha) within and from stillness.

Dzogchen: from the Tibetan tradition, an awareness based practice where we stabilise non-dual awareness. Once the concentration faculty builds, awareness has been felt, we can finally relax and let go in the natural state, also known as RIGPA.

  • We chant Pali Suttas and Tibetan Mantras before and after meditation. This is not a religious retreat by any means, and you’re not obliged to chant, however we use our voice to settle the mind, come out of the head, and back into the body. It can also be a fun and engaging way to connect with these lineages.

  • In the context of non-dual awareness and integration while on retreat, conversation will be allowed and encouraged during meal times, yet only at the dining hall — get to know your fellow meditators, share stories and form bonds. Outside of meal times, we remain in silence.

The invitation is simply to turn inward, reflect honestly, and offer what feels sincere and meaningful for you at the end of the retreat.
