Wake Up, Just Sit
5 Day Meditation Retreat
27th - 31st January 2027
Devon, United Kingdom

Join us for five days at High Heathercombe, tucked into six acres of Dartmoor National Park — woodland, open moor, and long views across the Heathercombe valley.

During this retreat, we’ll wake Up and sit, waxing the self and the path of meditation during these 5 days together. We’ll be working with specific texts as our guide and compass, particularly from the Zen tradition, and we’ll get on with the practice of sitting. The talks will also include some traditional instructions from Dogen, as well as talks about awakening, non-duality, and the stages of the path.

Across the five days, we'll work with four core meditation techniques, each introduced in turn:

  • Shamatha — calm-abiding practice, using the breath to settle into absorption, samadhi, and jhana

  • Shikantaza — "just sitting," the Soto Zen practice of sitting with no object and no goal, and the source of the retreat's name

  • Metta — loving-kindness practice, deliberately cultivating warmth toward oneself and others, and a gateway into deeper states of absorption

  • Zazen — awareness-based meditation, meeting this moment exactly as it is

At the heart of the retreat is sitting practice — guided, group, and solo — held within a simple daily rhythm: morning movement (yoga and qi gong, or "yoqi"), pranayama, sits throughout the day, Dharma talks and Q&As, shared meals, and open time for rest, reflection, and walks in nature.

The retreat offers a space to cultivate insight, stillness, and embodiment, in a contemplative environment that meets you at whatever pace suits you. If you want to sit deeply, there's ample time for that. If you'd rather move more gently, you can adjust the schedule to your needs.

All of our retreats follow a similar rhythm — a rigorous schedule of group, solo, and guided sits. What changes each time is the theme itself, carried through in the talks, instructions, guided meditations, and lines of enquiry we explore together.
